WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – Major roads are closed and people are sandbagging against the surging Nooksack River following days of rain in Whatcom County.

Emergency Management reports that the river crested in Everson Saturday evening but Main Street is still under 2 and a half feet of water and residents continue sandbagging efforts.

The City of Sumas has implemented their Flood Response Plan and is asking residents to restrict travel.

At least nine water rescues have been undertaken and as many as five vehicles have been washed away in flood waters over the past day.

Major roads are closed due to water over the roadway including Highway 9 in Acme and Van Zandt, Hannegan from Van Dyk Road to the Lynden city limits and Slater Road between Haxton and Labounty Drive.

Almost 120 roads in the county are either closed or restricted due to water and debris.

The cities of Everson, Nooksack, Sumas, Lynden and Ferndale are advised to prepare for or take actions to deal with continued local flooding.

Whatcom Emergency Management has set up (360)778-5311 as a special phone line for individuals and businesses to report impacts.
