WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office says floodwaters have been receding through the day Sunday but are still way above flood stage around Ferndale and downstream.
Ferndale remains under a flood warning and most residents of Marietta have been evacuated, some by boat.
The American Red Cross has opened an emergency shelter at Cordata Presbyterian Church in Bellingham.
Sumas sustained heavy flooding as the Nooksack River floodwaters pushed upstream into the Sumas River.
Sumas Advent Christian Church remains open as an emergency shelter.
Highway 9 is closed south of Sumas and the border crossing there is also closed.
Many Whatcom County roads remain closed or restricted because of water and debris over the roadway.
Drivers are reminded that water flowing over roadways can wash away vehicles and standing water can strand vehicles and leave occupants stranded.
The sheriff’s department conducted numerous water rescues on Saturday when people tried to drive through water over roadways.
Residents and businesses can report flood impacts at (360)778-5311.
