ANACORTES, Wash. — The Samish Indian Nation is one of six Washington tribes to receive federal funding to address transportation safety issues in and around tribal communities.
The U.S. Department of Transportation has allocated $760,000 for building a roundabout at the intersection of SR-20 and Campbell Lake Road.
A total of $1.8 million is earmarked for Washington tribes to develop and update transportation safety plans, improve road safety infrastructure, and crash data assessment, improvement, or analysis.
Awarded annually, projects are chosen whose outcomes will address the prevention and reduction of death or serious injuries in transportation related incidents in tribal areas, where statistically fatalities and injuries are higher than the rest of the nation.
