BLAINE, Wash. — The debate over a proposed no-shooting zone in Blaine continues as Blaine officials met with Lummi representatives in an effort to reach a compromise.

Blaine City Manager Michael Jones told The Northern Light that while there was a lot of back-and-forth at the meeting, general progress was made with Jones saying he’d speak to the Council about a possible compromise, and the Lummi Indian Business Council saying they would call a meeting to seek input from any of their interested hunters.

Ultimately, Jones said that the decision would be up to the Whatcom County Council to decide whether to amend the County Code to create a no-shooting zone.

Mayor Bonnie Onyon said the city is justified in asking for the no-shoot zone because Blaine’s city limits surround it all, but is unsure of how much credence the County Council will place on that.
