BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A Western Washington University student lost a lot of money when she fell victim to an internet job scam.
University spokesman Paul Cocke says the student responded to an ad for a job in January and received a cashiers check for $2,450 with a return address from the state of Georgia.
She was instructed to deposit the check into her account and use the money to buy retail gift cards, then text the numbers to a phone number.
She expected to be paid $450, but found the check was fraudulent and $2400 she used to buy the gift cards was deducted from her account.
University Police are investigating.
