BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Western Washington University is closing buildings on the Bellingham campus in response to the pandemic.
The university said Tuesday they will close four buildings, including the student rec center and the bookstore, through March 31.
Western Libraries will be closed to the public through April 5 as will the Performing Arts Center, which will close on March 21st.
The university is also asking students to stay home.
Melynda Huskey, the university’s Vice President for Enrollment and Student Services, says they received new guidance from the county health department that says the safest course of action is to assume all public areas have had exposure.
She says its best to consider we have all had contact with the virus, and take measures to limit its spread, especially because Western has so many 18-24 year old students who may only experience very mild symptoms.
The health department has confirmed one case of COVID-19 in a Western student.
