WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – A large wildfire near Mosquito Lake Road in the Middle Fork area of Whatcom County was highly visible and lit up social media Wednesday night.

The Department of Natural Resources say the Porter Creek fire was called in just after 7pm and had grown to 40 acres by Thursday morning.

In a Facebook post, the South Whatcom Fire Authority said the fire was highly visible, prompting comments from people who saw the fire from as far away Tsawwassen, BC.

DNR firefighters are mopping up today and securing the line.
