WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – A determined owner and law enforcement brought an end to the theft of a valuable muscle car in Whatcom County Sunday morning.
A Ferndale man told sheriff’s deputies that the sound of his restored ’69 Chevy Chevelle SS being started and tearing away on Slater Road woke him at around 6 a.m.
He posted on social media that his car with a value of about $50,000 had been stolen and reports began circulating that someone named “Nic” was driving it in the Custer area.
The owner tried following it, but was rammed into a ditch when he tried to block the driver in a dead end.
Another driver was also sideswiped as the car sped through a curve.
Deputies spotted the car on Birch Bay Lynden Road at about 9 a.m. and the driver took off toward Blaine where deputies and Blaine Police were able to cause him to spin out and stall the car.
They arrested 28-year-old Nicholas M. Bailey of Ferndale for Motor Vehicle Theft, Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, Assault, Hit and Run and Felony Eluding.
No one was hurt but the Chevelle sustained some damage.
