OLYMPIA, Wash. — The State Superintendent of Public Instruction released new grading guidelines to help ease stress for students while ensuring they get the education they need.
A failing grade “will not be an option” under new framework set by State Superintendent Chris Reykdal.
He’s eliminated the pass/fail grading option and instructed educators to focus instead on helping students reach critical standards of learning rather than make sure each assignment is done.
K-8th grade students must demonstrate effort and success in learning standards set out by teachers.
Grading for students in 9-12th grade will follow principles outlined by Reykdal starting with “Do no harm” and focused on helping them continue in school or life.
