WHATCOM, SKAGIT County, Wash. – More water is being provided to homeowners in rural parts of Whatcom and Skagit counties.
The state Department of Ecology has amended the instream flow rule that affects communities in the Nooksack River watershed.
It adds flexibility for projects that save excess water during high flows and release it during low summer flows to bolster streams, and it establishes a water use conservation standard for new domestic wells.
A spokesperson from the department says the amendment balances the needs of future rural growth in the Nooksack watershed, while protecting and restoring local stream flows.
The change takes effect June 27.
