BLAINE, Wash. — Invasive green crabs are proving to be a problem in Drayton Harbor.
The European green crab was first detected there last August.
This May marked the beginning of the 2020 trapping season and the state Department of Fish and Wildlife set 150 traps in Drayton Harbor.
A marine ecologist with the Washington Sea Grant tells the Northern Light they have already caught about 50.
Scientists are concerned that the green crabs’ appetite for species like Dungeness crab, oysters and clams could impact native ecosystems.
