LYNDEN, Wash. – It was peaceful but loud as a mostly young crowd marched through Lynden in support of Black lives and social justice Sunday, July 5th.
KGMI’s Joe Teehan was there as they were met by people who said they stood for freedom, patriotism and the police.
It’s a message that speakers outside of City Hall said communities like Lynden need to hear, saying “because racial prejudice is everywhere!”
But one that a sizable flag waving crowd tried to drown out chanting “U.S.A” during speeches.
Marco is a Lynden resident who says he’s encountered racism, telling KGMI “both sides are saying that we all are equal, but we don’t see that; as a person of color. And so, I think it’s important to spread that message of – that’s what we are fighting for – is equality, because it’s not happening.”
But Bob from Custer has a different take, saying “because it’s not just Black lives that matter, it’s all lives, and our police department matters.”
Elisa said she has friends on both sides, telling Joe “it would be great if everybody was on the same side, eventually, and I think some of them are and they don’t know it.”
The march was a chance for many sides to express their feelings on a sunny, summer afternoon.
