Workers at Intalco Works in Ferndale will get help from the federal government to get new jobs.

Alcoa announced in April that it was curtailing operations at the aluminum smelter, leaving around 700 workers unemployed.

The U.S. Department of Labor on Wednesday announced plans to grant Intalco workers help through the Trade Adjustment Assistance program, which will give workers opportunities for services like training, job search and relocation allowances, and income support.

The decision was sparked by a petition filed in May by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace workers.
