FERNDALE, Wash. — A new mural commissioned in downtown Ferndale had its beginnings with a long-ago graffiti arrest.

The artwork is on a building that used to be a machine shop where the uncle of the artist Matt French worked.

As a youth, French was arrested in Ferndale for graffiti and spent his brief jail time drawing on envelopes.

Those drawings were published by a skateboarding magazine and his now-international art career was on its way.

The mural is visible from the road at 2050 Vista.
