OLYMPIA, Wash. – Monofilament fishing line is great for catching fish but can also be deadly to other wildlife.
The Department of Fish and Wildlife says it’s important to keep monofilament line out of the environment.
It lasts for centuries and can easily kill fish, birds and other animals by entangling them or becoming ingested.
The department asks that you avoid discarding monofilament line, pick up and properly discard any line you find and report any entangled animals.
It’s placed monofilament line recycle bins in recreation areas around the state, including at Moran State Park on Orcas Island.
Crews have collected more than 142,000 feet of line for recycling in recent years.
