WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – Bellingham, Ferndale, Mount Baker and Lummi Schools will begin the new year with all students learning from home.

The districts made the announcements Wednesday after Whatcom County Health Officer Dr. Greg Stern advised them that it’s currently not safe to open schools amid the pandemic.

The districts say teachers and staff have been preparing for this possibility and will be better prepared for remote instruction than during last spring’s emergency.

The Blaine School Board will discuss re-opening plans at a meeting Wednesday night and the Lynden School Board will meet Thursday night to consider the recommendation.

The Nooksack Valley Superintendent Mark Johnson says they haven’t decided on an opening model yet, while Lynden Christian Schools say on their website that they intend to open with students in classrooms.

Bellingham Schools have pushed back opening day to Tuesday, September 8th.
