FERNDALE, Wash. — Multiple people have been cited for causing trouble at the March for Black Lives event in Ferndale.

City spokesperson Riley Sweeney says Ferndale police officers and deputies from the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office monitored the youth-led event and associated counter-protests in the downtown area on July 31st.

Sweeney says the event was mostly peaceful, but two alarming incidents were caught on video and resulted in citations.

In one, a scuffle broke out between several people at Centennial Riverwalk Park and resulted in the citation of Chad Schmitt.

In another, a suspect identified as 63-year-old Robert Turner of Bellingham was on the counter-protest side when he reportedly crossed the street and pushed two women, one of whom pressed charges.
