OLYMPIA, Wash. — Whatcom County unemployment ticked up in July as we continue to see economic turmoil because of the pandemic.

The Employment Security Department says our jobless rate was 11.8% last month, up one-and-a-half percent from June.

More people were working in July compared to June, but the number of people in the overall workforce also increased.

Looking at numbers from a year ago, our unemployment rate was just 5% and about 3000 more people had jobs in Whatcom County in July 2019.
