BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The Secretary of State has directed all counties to send ballot packets via First Class mail at least 15 days before the November election.

Kim Wyman’s office says the emergency order is for consistency statewide and to help ease voters’ minds amid controversy over the Postal Service.

Whatcom County Auditor Diana Bradrick says her office is already in front of this rule.

She says local ballots are mailed and returned via pre-paid First Class postage.

And she says they’ve met with the Secretary of State and Postal Service representatives who assure her that election mail will receive priority handling and no delays are expected.

But she still advises voters to mail their ballots as early as possible.
