SKAGIT COUNTY, Wash. – A wildfire in our region continues to grow, although at a limited pace.

The US Forest Service says the Downey Creek Fire in the Glacier Peak Wilderness has grown to 1000 acres and is causing a lot of smoke.

The fire 17 miles northeast of Darrington is thought to have been caused by lightning on August 16th.

Fire fighters have struggled to battle it because of the difficult terrain.

Crews are working to remove downed trees from Suiattle River Road to allow for heavy equipment to enter the area.

Moving forward crews will continue to assess the fire and remove hazard trees along the road.

A number of campgrounds and roads in the area have been closed for public safety.
