BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The City of Bellingham has bought 125 acres of land around Lake Whatcom for $1.8 million.

City Council President Gene Knutsen announced the purchase, which he said was discussed in a closed session Monday.

The city bought the land from the Oeser Company that makes wooden utility poles from Douglas fir and Western red cedar.

Preservation of land around the lake has been a primary goal for several years.
