SURREY, BC — A Bellingham man is facing a hefty fine after he boated into Canadian waters to visit his girlfriend.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police say they encountered his boat while patrolling the U.S./Canada marine border on September 27.

Onboard they found a 49-year-old Bellingham man along with a 50-year-old woman from Surrey, BC.

Investigators discovered that the man had left his home port that morning and picked up his girlfriend at a marina in Surrey, but he failed to report his crossing and did not meet the entry requirements under the current COVID-19-related quarantine restrictions.

The man was fined $1000 and the woman was taken back to Surrey where she will self-isolate for the next two weeks.
