OLYMPIA, Wash. — A former police chief is accused of stealing state disability benefits after claiming she couldn’t work because she was crushed by a large corpse.

The Department of Labor and Industries says Brenda Lynn Cavoretto was police chief of the Grant County town of Coulee City when she tried to retrieve the body of a domestic violence suspect who had hanged himself in a barn.

The 285-pound body fell on her, and she claimed the incident caused debilitating physical and mental conditions.

But an L&I investigation revealed she went on to produce and pose for photos of pin-up models, which are glamour shots similar in style to World War II movie actresses.

The department says she fraudulently received more than $67,000 in workers comp benefits.
