BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The first big storm of the season is expected to hit Friday.

A winter storm watch is in effect starting in the morning for elevations above 2000 feet.

The National Weather Service says expects total snow accumulation up to 11 inches at those elevations.

The watch is primarily for the cascade mountains and valleys of Whatcom and Skagit Counties, including Maple Falls and the Mount Baker Ski Area.

Most of the region will likely get a blast of colder air bringing the first potential widespread frost of the season as temperatures fall well into the 30s for much of the lowlands.

Gusty winds are expected along the Whatcom County coasts and on the waters of the Strait.
