BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Local authorities are prepared to respond to any civil unrest following Election Day.
Whatcom County Sheriff Bill Elfo issued a statement Friday addressing the issue.
Elfo says the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office has received multiple inquiries regarding its ability and preparedness to respond in the case of post-election civil disturbances.
He says extensive efforts have been made to plan and prepare for the protection of the First Amendment Rights of everyone and to quell any violence or criminal activity.
Deputies and other officers are trained and will remain available to quickly respond if the need arises.
On Saturday, in an additional joint statement issued by offices of the Whatcom County Auditor, Executive, and Sheriff’s office, the group called for civility.
The statement urged citizens to treat fellow community members with respect and kindness as the best antidote to public anxiety.
Bellingham Police also say they’ll have the personnel and resources available to deal with any situation.
