VICTORIA, B.C. — The Strait of Juan de Fuca is a good bit cleaner these days as Victoria BC’s new sewage treatment plant is up and running.
British Columbia’s capitol city has been fouling the waters of the strait with its raw sewage since 1894, but the new plant has ended the practice.
Victoria’s Times-Colonist newspaper reports Premier John Horgan told Governor Jay Inslee in a video call that “we finally did the right thing.”
The chair of the board that has overseen the construction of the plant says its treated water exceeds federal and provincial requirements for cleanliness.
He calls it an important development as there have been calls for a tourism boycott of Victoria as long as it continued dumping its raw sewage into the strait.
