BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The first COVID vaccines are being administered in Whatcom County this week.

The Lummi Nation began vaccinating Thursday with 300 doses as it fights surging cases with a shelter-in-place order.

Lummi Nation tribal elder James Scott, a facilities worker at the reservation’s community clinic, was the first to be vaccinated.

Two local health care workers will be the first non-tribal Whatcom County residents to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

They are Agnes Kuc, a registered nurse who’s been working in the PeaceHealth St. Joseph COVID unit; and Raj Deol, a pulmonologist who has cared for COVID patients throughout the pandemic.

They’ll receive the Pfizer vaccine Friday morning at PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center.
