BURLINGTON, Wash. — A Skagit County student is the first Burlington-Edison High School student to enter a national cooking skills competition — and he won.

The Skagit Valley Herald reports Junior Sandoval competed in and won the food art category of the Family Career and Community Leaders of America national competition.

Sandoval had to choose a children’s book then depict it within 25 minutes using fruits and vegetables.

The competition focused on the students’ sanitation and safety skills, knife cuts and technique.

Nationally, 386 students competed in the event, which was held online this year for the first time due to the pandemic. .
