OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — The Washington state Legislature convened under tight security Monday.

There was a large security presence at the Capitol due to concerns about efforts by armed groups who might try to disrupt the proceedings.

Two people were arrested.

A right-wing militia initially encouraged its members to occupy the Capitol when the Legislature starts its 105-day session.

An organizer canceled the event but said he expected some people might still show up to create mayhem.

As the session got underway, Republican leader John Braun said the body should avoid highly divisive proposals at this time, saying he encourages lawmakers to work in good faith to try to find compromises on controversial issues.

42nd District Senator Doug Ericksen of Ferndale called for a singular focus, asking that the session be adjourned and immediately reconvene as a 30-day emergency session solely to handle COVID-19 response.

Ericksen’s proposal did not advance.
