BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Sheriff’s deputies successfully intercepted a tobacco smuggling attempt at the Whatcom County Jail.
The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office says deputies discovered information relating to inmates trying to smuggle contraband into the facility through phone calls made from the jail on January 14.
The following evening, deputies caught the suspected accomplice near the jail and found a large straw with a loop made from rope attached to it in his vehicle.
The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Steven Dodson, later admitted that the straw was filled with tobacco and that he had intended to bring it to the inmates in outdoor recreation.
But, ultimately, Dodson landed himself behind bars.
Contraband smuggling into the Whatcom County Jail made national news in 2013 when a man was arrested for launching a marijuana-laden arrow toward the jail’s recreation area. The arrow missed and landed on the roof.
