BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A new ordinance proposed in the Whatcom County Council would help a local business weather the pandemic.
A measure introduced by Whatcom County Council members Barry Buchanon and Ben Elenbaas would close a side street in Custer.
The proposal directs Public Works to close a section of 4th street in Custer so Tony’s Tavern can set up an outdoor seating structure.
Elenbaas says the measure was introduced at Tuesday’s council meeting.
He said he’d hoped to get it in as an emergency ordinance which would help get it into effect sooner, but there didn’t seem to be the political will to do that.
Elenbaas said it did have a good amount of support.
The Custer 4th street closure would continue until the establishment is allowed to re-open to 100% capacity under state guidelines.
