Nearly 30,000 receive vaccine in Whatcom County as slowdown in new COVID-19 cases levels off

OLYMPIA, Wash. — The slowdown in new first time positive virus tests in Whatcom County has levelled off.

For the 7 days ending Sunday, the state Department of Health notched 296 coronavirus positives, up from 185 for the week prior to that.

In the past month, 17 deaths have been attributed to COVID-19 on 1394 first-time positives, for a 1.2% death rate.

Through last Saturday, the state reported nearly 30,000 vaccine shots given to county residents, with data still being tabulated.

This as 1st District US Congresswoman Suzan DelBene led 7 members of the Washington congressional delegation in urging President Joe Biden to work with the Canadian government to safely reopen the Canada-U.S. border.

In a letter, the lawmakers told the President “communities on both sides of the border have been significantly impacted” by border restrictions.
