POINT ROBERTS, Wash. — Whatcom County recently got national attention.
CBS News published a story titled “Cut off from the rest of America, a small town endures lockdown,” looking at how the coronavirus pandemic has impacted the community of Point Roberts, where residents must travel 24 miles through Canada to get to the mainland United States.
That’s not possible with current COVID-19 travel restrictions, except for trips that are deemed “essential.”
Some say the community is self-sufficient, but Brian Calder, the director of the Point Roberts Chamber of Commerce, tells CBS correspondent Lee Cowan that’s not true.
The town’s fire chief Chris Carleton is currently working to get vaccines for all residents as they continue to push for loosened travel restrictions..
