OLYMPIA, Wash. — North Whatcom County will be ground zero in the struggle against so-called murder hornets again this year.
Washington and Canadian entomologists held a joint news conference Wednesday to outline their battle plans.
Sven Spichiger with the Washington Department of Agriculture says they’ll concentrate on the area between Blaine and Lynden where an Asian giant hornet nest was found and eradicated last fall.
Paul van Westendorp with the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture says they’ve seen a dwindling number of the invasive species since a nest was found and destroyed on Vancouver Island in 2019.
Both agencies are encouraging citizen scientists to assist the effort by setting traps on their property.
