BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The City of Bellingham moved to clear the latest homeless encampment to occupy a city park Thursday morning.
City workers backed by a sizable police presence moved into Laurel Park at 8 a.m.
Police Lieutenant Claudia Murphy says officers and workers didn’t encounter any organized protests and the clearing has been peaceful with the exception of one arrest.
She didn’t have details of what led officers to arrest the person.
She says many of the campers have taken advantage of local services.
Lighthouse Mission Ministries executive director Hans Erchinger-Davis says at least nine people checked in to Base Camp following camp removal.
He says the Mission offers a roof over peoples’ heads and services that can help them change their lives, which will have a ripple affect.
They’re looking for volunteers and can always use monetary donations.
