OLYMPIA, Wash. — The ShakeAlert earthquake early warning system will go live in Washington on May 4th.

The state Military Department says the alert system will give residents seconds of warning to drop, cover and hold on before shaking arrives.

Governor Inslee says it will help save lives and reduce damage to critical infrastructure, but reminds residents to be earthquake-prepared with plans and supplies.

ShakeAlert does not predict an earthquake but warns people and systems that one has occurred and shaking is imminent.

Apps to receive ShakeAlert warnings are available for Apple and Android devices.
