LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Bellingham’s air quality is doing better than many other parts of the state.
In the American Lung Association’s 22nd annual State of The Air report card, Bellingham ranked as 7th on the list of cleanest cities for particle air pollution.
Washington had 4 cities in the top 25 worst around the US: Yakima, Spokane, Seattle/Tacoma area, and the Vancouver/Portland metro.
Carrie Nyssen is Senior Director of Air Quality Advocacy.
She said the majority of bad air days for particle pollution are due to smoke from wood burning stoves or wildfires.
Nyssen noted work on air quality over the past several decades has paid off, adding that there has been a lot of really good progress around the nation due to the Clean Air Act and the things we’re doing to clean up our air.
Nyssen says understanding of lung harm from particulate pollution keeps improving, adding to the urgency to keep working on clean air.
