BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A public ceremony will be held later this month to prepare a Lummi totem pole for a journey to sacred sites in the U.S. and the nation’s capitol.
The Lummi Nation House of Tears Carvers created the totem to promote the preservation and restoration of sacred lands, landscapes and waterways.
The ceremony will be held on Granary Avenue at Bellingham’s waterfront on Monday, May 24th beginning at 2 p.m.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the start of the journey has been changed to July 14th, arriving in Washington, D.C. on July 28th.
The totem will travel to sites including the Grand Canyon, Bears Ears and the Black Hills before being presented to President Biden and an exhibit in The Smithsonian.
