The top researcher at UW Medicine’s Memory and Brain Wellness Center is giving a big thumbs up to the FDA’s approval of a new drug to treat Alzheimer’s Disease.

The decision met with some controversy over the drug’s effectiveness, but Dr. Charles Bernick calls it a huge step forward, and says previous drugs just treated symptoms and not the disease itself.

The drug, aducanumab (ad-you-cana-mab), has been shown to slow the progression of the illness 20 to 25%.

Dr. Bernick says people affected by Alzheimer’s Disease should definitely consult their doctor about the drug.
