Dangerous levels of Microcystin – a toxin produced by algae – have been detected in Wiser Lake.
Microcystin is known to cause liver damage in people and animals upon ingestion.
Caution signage has been posted at Wiser Lake since 2019, but recent test results toxin levels are 20 times the maximum safe level.
Residents are being advised to avoid contact with lake water, although boating and fishing are not a significant risk.
This and other algal toxins are naturally occurring, although human and animal acitivity can impact the intensity of algal blooms.
