The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat watch for Whatcom County and much of Western Washington.
The watch is in effect from Friday afternoon through Monday afternoon with highs projected in the 90’s and possibly over 100 in some areas.
The extreme heat significantly increases the potential for heat-related illnesses, especially during outdoor activities.
John Gargett with the Whatcom County Sheriff Department Division of Emergency Management says be prepared.
“Make sure and carry a lot of water and stay hydrated, the body needs that. And don’t forget the pets either,” says Gargett.
He says cooling off can be dangerous, too, as our lakes and rivers haven’t warmed up much and the cold water can shock a person and lead to distress.
And be aware of fire danger.
An open burn ban goes into effect in Whatcom County Friday at 5 p.m.
