Two Whatcom County Public Works employees were hospitalized Tuesday after being hit by an SUV.

The two employees were working on the shoulder of the northbound lane of Lummi Shore Drive when a southbound vehicle crossed the center line, struck the guard rail, struck the workers, and then crashed head-on into the Public Works vehicle.

The Public Works employees were following safety procedures when setting up their work zone and were not on the roadway when the incident occurred.

One of the employees was released from the hospital Tuesday evening, the other was held overnight for observation.

The Public Works Department is close-knit, and are being offered emotional support and assistance.

The department will conduct a full investigation.
