Following a two-week cross-country journey, the Lummi Nation’s totem pole has arrived in Washington, D.C.

The intricately hand-carved and painted 25-foot totem pole stopped at several spots of importance to Native Americans, each facing threats of development tied to natural resources or pipelines.

The totem pole’s journey, dubbed the “Red Road to DC’ was led by about a dozen people, many of whom are members of the Lummi Nation.

The pole will be on display for three days outside the entrance of the National Museum of the American Indian.

Organizers are now working to find a permanent home for the pole in or near the Washington, DC area.
