The Washington State Department of Ecology is reminding people to take caution when visiting Swift Creek and Sumas River this summer.
Swift Creek and downstream Sumas River carry naturally occurring asbestos from the Sumas Mountain landslide.
In dry weather, sediments containing asbestos pose a particular hazard.
The Department of Ecology warns against walking, driving, cycling, horseback riding, or otherwise disturbing the riverbeds and dredge piles where flooding may have left asbestos deposits.
For more information, including how to handle contaminated sediments, visit the Department of Ecology’s website.
