BELLINGHAM, Wash. – We’ve been hearing about critical school bus driver shortages around the country as fall classes begin.

That’s the case locally, but districts here aren’t sounding the alarm yet.

“We are, just like a lot of districts across the country, experiencing a driver shortage,” says Bellingham Schools spokesperson Dana Smith. “But we are hiring and we’re finding great candidates.”

Smith says driving a school bus is a great way to earn some extra money while staying involved with kids.

“It’s mostly part-time work. You have great benefits,” says Smith. “Most of the work is during the school day and, of course, during the school year calendar.”

They do all the training for new drivers so applicants don’t have to have a CDL license to apply.

A check of other local districts finds they’re also hiring school bus drivers.
