BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Investigators say a fire that heavily damaged a Bellingham church was intentionally set.

Multiple calls to 911 reported the fire at Ukrainian Evangelical Church in the 2500 block of Cornwall Avenue at about 4:25 a.m. on Friday, September 10.

Witnesses said they saw flames and heard breaking glass.

Bellingham Police officers were first on the scene and found the entire south wing of the building on fire.

Bellingham Fire crews brought it under control, and Bellingham Police Lieutenant Claudia Murphy says the initial investigation points to arson.

Investigators are working to determine who may have started the fire, where it began and what caused it.

Damage to the building is estimated to be several hundred thousand dollars.
