A pair of viruses have been killing an alarming amount of deer in the Pacific Northwest.

Researchers at Washington State University tell KOMO News that they’ve seen an uptick in bluetongue and epizootic hemorrhagic disease, or EHD.

Both illnesses are spread through insects that are typically active in hot, dry conditions.

Washington, Oregon, and Idaho have all reported hundreds of deer deaths over the past month, prompting some to close off hunting areas due to the diseases.
