BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Two people are dead following separate crashes in Bellingham earlier this week.

Bellingham Police said that the crashes occurred within an hour of each other Tuesday night.

The first accident occurred just before 8 p.m. on the Mount Baker Highway at Chance Road where a car struck a 54 year old bicyclist.

The driver told investigators that he could not see the biker, who was wearing dark clothing.

No charges will be filed in that accident.

Less than an hour later, officers responded to a crash at the intersection of Iowa, Woburn and Yew Streets.

Witnesses say that a car involved in a street race lost control and hit a tree, killing a 28 year old passenger.

Investigators say that the driver, 28 year old Oscar Bengoa-Alas, was intoxicated at the time of the accident

Officers arrested him Wednesday night on suspicion of vehicular homicide after he was treated for injuries at PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center.
