WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – Whatcom Superior Court and the Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center are teaming up to avoid a rush of evictions when the ban expires at the end of the month.

Dispute Resolution Center Director Moonwater says tenants and landlords who are in a dispute over unpaid rent will have to come to them first.

“We’re here to support landlords and tenants alike. Again, to ensure they are connected to available resources and that they have a chance to talk to one another,” says Moonwater. “Many folks have not had direct communication or have had difficulty contacting one another. Or are unclear on what process they need to avail themselves of.”

Disputes that they can’t resolve will then move to the court system.

But Moonwater says the program has been largely successful in other parts of the state.
