CUSTER, Wash. – The Custer rest areas on I-5 in Whatcom County will be closed indefinitely beginning Friday, October 15th.

They are among several rest areas north of Seattle that WSDOT is closing because of staffing shortages and misuse by the public.

The department says some travelers have stayed beyond posted limits, vandalized facilities, and illegally dumped garbage and waste.

Some WSDOT employees have also been verbally abused and threatened.

Rest areas northbound and southbound at Smokey Point north of Marysville and the southbound Silver Lake Rest Area in Everett will also be closed.

The department will decide when to reopen the rest areas early next year.
